Failing Stock Sale

HEAVY PASSINGS YESTERDAY POOR APP.EAL OP MID-WEEK OFFERING The experience of conducting a midweek stock sale in Feilding must have been disappointing to vendors for yesterday’s effort was marked by a want of interest in the offering. The decision to hold the last sale of the old year on a Wednesday, when Feilding observes its half-holiday, was apparently made with the object of clearing up the sale well before the Christmas holidays and judging by the heavy passings the object was far from being realised. When the business community learned that yesterday was sale day they were very surprised and at a loss to understand why, if the day was to be altered because of festive season arrangements, the sale could not have been held on Thursday. The fact that the town was to be closeu rrom 12.30 p.m. on Wednesday probably influenced a large number who may have attended the sale and combined shopping as well. Of the fat sheep offered three pens of lambs sold at market rates, the best price being 12s 7d. Ewe mutton slumped but wethers and b.f. 2-tlis. held their own at late rates. There was no variation in ruling rates for beef, the best of the heifers offered making £3 15s. There were no store sheep sold, while the sales of store cattle were confined , in the main io steers. A modest offering of dairy stock sold on a quality basis. The following are the quotations:-™ Fat sheep: Lambs, 10s lOd, lls 4d to 11s 7d; b.f. 2-ths., 10s, lls to lls 8d; ewes, as, 5s 3d to 5s lid; wethers and maiden ewes (mixed), lls Id.
