World-wide Tributes
AMY JOHNSON’S PEAT PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Nov. 2U. Tributes of admiration from all over the world have reached Amy Johnson (Mrs. Mollison) in Capo Town. Among them were messages from the Secretary for Air, Lord Londonderry, and the Royal Aeronautical Society. Several world fliors, including Amelia Earhart Putnam and the French ace, i>. Co-s-tes, were among those who expressed admiration for her really remarKable flight. Later details serve to emphasise the greatness of her achievement. Not only did she encounter a tropicaj storm, but when a slight defect in oil pressure occurred she had herself to improvise spanners and other tools to rectify it. Her time of four days six hours 53 minutes would have been even better had it not been necessary foT her to return to Gzo when sue found after an hour’s flight into the desert that her petrol tanks had not been properly filled and contained only enough spirit to enable her to return there for fresh fuel. Although she had only five hours’ sleep during the trip she made up for this last night by sleeping for 14J hours. Her de Haviland Puss Moth behaved magnificently throughout the trip and is still in perfect condition.
