"When three men and a woman, clinging to an overturned boat in a rough sea near Clacton, England, were being rescued by a man in a rowing boat, the woman, Mrs. Brett, of Seven Kings, called out, “Leave me alone; save the others first." The party of four, Mr. and Mrs. Brett, of Seven Kings, Mr. Goddard, of Forest Gate, and a friend, had gone out in a small boat from Jay Wick for a sail. A gust of wind upset the boat 500 yards from the shore. Mr. J. G. Collum went to the rescue in his rowing boat. , When he reached the upturned craft he tried first to save the woman. She refused his help till all the men were safely in his boat, and then she allowed herself to be rescueu.
