Sir Apirana Ngata lias accepted an invitation to bo tho speaker at the annual breaking-up ceremony of tho Palmerston North Technical School, to bq held on December 9.
After nearly four years as a linotype operator on the stall' of tho Manawatu Daily Times, Mr. W. A. Smith severs his connection to-day in order to go farming at Levin. Yesterday there was a large and representative gathering of tho Times staff round tho “stone” when tho occasion was taken to wish him evory success in his new ventures and to present him with a serviceable travelling rug. Tho death occurred on Thursday afternoon of Mr. John Evans, a wellknown and popular resident of Eoxton. Deceased’s demise was sudden and unexpected, although ho had been in a serious condition for some days previously suffering from pneumonia and pleurisy. Deceased was born at Otautau, in Southland, and came to Eoxton 20 years ago. For some time he was associated with his brother, Mr. A. Evans, in business but later took up contracting and farming in which pursuit ho was engaged at tho time of his death. Tho late Mr. Evans leaves to mourn their loss a wife and three young children. Messrs. Alfred (Eoxton), Ernest (Wellington), and William Evans (Whangarei) are brothors of deceased, and Mesdamcs F. D. Whiblcy (Westport), Hooper (Whangarei), Weavers (Tirnnru), and Westwood (Palmerston North) are sisters. Mrs. Evans, snr., of Palmerston North, is tho mother of deceased. The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. to-day, leaving deceased’s late residence, Johnston street, for the Eoxton cemetery.
