No Heroes, Heroines, Villains —or Plot
STEREOTYPED FILM FORMULAE LIKELY TO BE ABANDONED.
Unless all signs fail, there will be a cycle of motion picture subjects without the stereotyped hero, heroine and villain formulae next year.
Universal recently acquired a book, of which over 100,000 copies havo been sold, which' is something in itself to give pause in a year when 5,000 copies is regarded as a successful book. This latest acquisition, “Only Yesterday,” is by Frederick Lewis Allen, assistanteditor of Harper’s Magazine. It has no hero,’ no heroine, and no so-called movie plot. J y <
“Only Yesterday” was bought by Harper Brothers, and within a few weeks established itself as the surprise book of the year. It will present a problem in adaptation and production, but it has a spirit and a tempo which Carl Laemmle, junr., believes will be admirable-for the screen.
