Boys’ High School

MILE EVENTS PROVIDE INTERESTING RACING

Tho mile events in conjunction with tho annual athletic sports of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School were decided at tho school grounds yesterday afternoon. With good entries in all races a high standard of running resulted, and each event was keenly contested. Tho points awarded yesterday will count towards the individual and club championships when the sports are held on the 9th instant. The first race was tho handicap under 16, in which Barry, maintaining the lead for a considerable time, got home by a fairly comfortable margin from Morrison and Anncar. Hanford, who had kept well up over the whole distance, just failed to get a place. In the open handicap, Smith, off scratch, ran a well-judged race to take first place. After keeping a middle position in tho early stages, he wont up to tho front in tho final lap, and broko the tape a good ten yards in front of Raven arid Jeffs.

Miller, who figured so prominently in tho under 14 events Mst year, showed his ability over a longer distance by winning tho junior championship mile in a close finish, after tho leading competitors had kept well bunched right round the course. The best running of the day was that in tho senior championship, although the winner, Calvert, did not eclipse tho school record. Calvert took the lead early and kept his position right over the three laps, followed closely by Sinclair, Cutler and Fletch In tho final 200 yards, Hadfield, who at one stage had been second to last, put on a spectacular burst of speed and came in a very close second to Calvert.
