Field-Marshal Lord Methuen Passes

Field-Marshal Lord Paul Sani'or.. Methuen, G.C.8., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.0., L.L.D., was born in 1845, and was a son of the second Baron Methuen. He was educated at Eton and was appointed to a lieutenancy in the Scots Guards in 1864. He saw special service on the Gold Coast in 1873, served in the Ashanti 'War in 1874, and in 18V 7, when a Major, was appointed Militafy Secretary to the Commander-in-Chief in Ireland. Later that year he went to Berlin as Military Attache and remained there four years. Prom Berlin he went to the post of Assistant Adju-tant-General and Assistant QtiartermaS-ter-Generdl of the Homo District. He served in the Egyptian War in 1882 as A.A. and Q.M.G., and was mentioned in dispatches, receiving the 0.8., the Order of Osmanic, Third Class, and the Khedive’s Star. In 1884-85 he commanded Methuen’s Hotso in the Bechuanaland campaign, and received tne C.M.G. In 1888 he was appointed Deputy Adjutant-General in Bouth Africa, and two years later was. promoted Major-General. For five years from 1892 he was in command of the Home District, and during the South African War of 1899-1902 he was m command of the First Division, hirst Army Corps. From 1903 to 1908 he was in charge of the Eastern Command, and in 1907-09 was G.O.C. in south Africa. In 1909 he was made Governor of Natal and in 1915-19 was Governor and Commander-In-Chief in Malta. He married twice, and leaves three sons and two daughters..
