Papatawa
From Our Own Correspondent. ■ Last Sunday atfernoon Flight-Lieut. Buckeridge treated the residents of Papatawa to some rather spectacular stunting in his aeroplane. Tho landing ground was in Mr. C. Cunningham’s paddock, which appears to be an ideal spot for the purpo'se. One or twd members of the Woodvillo Aero Club were given free Tides, and on® passenger, in particular had . the benefit of many of the thrills of aeroplaning. Ik was not a very good day it being cloudy and windy. Labour Day was ushered in with pouring rain which continued throughout the day, and all hopes of spending the day anywhere but indoors were speedily abandoned. One can almost see thei grass growling these days and ’.so most of the farmers have prepared and shut np their hay paddocks. The white butterfly has made its. appearance in the district so it is to : be hoped that the children of the district will do their best to catch as many as they can. The Woodville Horticultural Society is awarding a prize to the one the most. Ploughing is still keeping the farmers busy and there seems to be more land under cultivation this year than for many previous years. Shearing operations have commenced in the district. Some of the dry sheep have been shown so it will not be long before the shearing season proper begins. The lambs bn most of the sheep farms are in very good condition ana seem to be more forward this year, no doubt due to the very mild Spring we are experiencing. The United Dairy Company is showing a marked increase in its output this year compared with, last year’s returns. Its high grading points (95) for export butter in the grading stores at Wellington show that the excelent quality of “Whariti” butter is still being -maintained. At present tho company i» making about 75 boxes daily. The Papatawa ehee'se factory is. also showing a marked increase on last year’s production. The tests on the whole are also very good. There are still a number of cows around tho district being blown and one or two of the dairy farmers have had several casualties as a result. Numbers of farmers spend a good portion of each day shifting the cows from one paddock to another to prevent them from getting blown. The many friends of Mr. Harold Smith will be .pleased to hearheis home again after several weeks in the Pahiatua hospital. Ho is 'making good progress towards recovery and although still an out-patient, ho is looking much, better and we hope to.sco him his old genial self again Soon. Miss I. Bradley, who has been holidaying in Waipawa, returned home last Monday. Miss Sclatcr, of Roxdalc, left for Havelock on Monday. Mrs. Horwood and Mrs. Watson and her young son, are tho guests of Mrs. ,J. 8. Nelson, of Roxdalc. • Mrs. L, Nikolaison,' of Te EehiiDgo, is also the guest of Mrs, Nelson for a few days
