STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS. Excellent entries have been rocoived for thi3 year’s amateur championships of New South Wales, which will commence at Rose Bay on Juno 11. Added interest will bo given to the event by the appearance of the foremost Now Zealand players, who will be hero to defend their Kirk-AVindeyer Cup honours (states the Sydney Morning Herald). Altogether, New Zealand will have eight representatives to uphold her prestige on the goliing field, and tho friendly invaders will have to he treated with tho utmost respect. Tho championship carnival will commence with tho foursome. Between 10 and 50 pairs have entered, and some strong combinations are available. Last year’s champions, S. A. Keane and O. Thompson, will not be defending, as tho former is nowadays a resident of Queensland. The foursome event is decided by stroko play, over-50 holes. Nearly 100 players will appear in the singles championship. J. Ferricr is defending his title, and judging by his recent form, which has been marked by amazing brilliancy and consistency, he will again bo difficult to defeat. That strong player, G. Thompson, may upset calculations, while R. J. Withycombe's recent rounds must not be forgotten. The claims of the New Zealanders will have to be considered. They havo the reputation of being excellent match players. The council has -wisely decided to adhere to the conditions that governed last year’s event. Tho competitors (whose handicaps arc limited to nine strokes) will meet in match play, and, as a result, interest should be maintained from the start, l’rior t-o last year, little interest was taken in the qualifying rounds, but last year, when niateir play was introduced, the games attracted remarkablo galleries from the first round. The preliminary rounds will be played over 18 holes on June IS, 20, and 21. The semi-finals and final will be decided over 30 holes, and aro down for decision on Juno 23 and June 25. Draw Tor The Preliminary Bounds. The draw for the New South Wales amateur golfing championships resulted in bringing together some interesting players for the opening rounds. The foursome event will bo decided by 30 holes’ stroko play on June 11, with tho singles battle commencing on tho following Saturday, and being continued on June 20, 21, 23 and 25, the last two dates being set apart for tne semifinal and final rounds, each of 30 holes. The other rounds will be over IS hoics. Match play, of course, will be the method of conducting the championship. Some exceptionally strong pairs aro available for the foursome competition. In the absence of S. A. Keane in Brisbane, G. Thompson has joined forces with A. N. Brown, a club-mate of Bonnio Boon. Keane and Thompson were tho previous holders of tho title, but tho now combination should play a very prominent part in the proceedings. Other strong teams are G. Nigel SmitliH. Morrison, L. K. Harrisou-B. J. Withycombe, T. S. McKay-0. C. Euwald, E. K. Lee Brown-W. E. Dobson, W. G. Sturrock-E. L. Apperly, J. Ferrior-E. Pope, and C. Rana Wagg-H. A. Black. Tho last-named players aro from New Zealand. The most interesting match in tho singles event in tho first round is between \V. E. Dobson and E. J. Withycombe. Both are exceptionally brilliant players, and their meeting should be productive of high-class play. W. E. Smith meets a club mate in J. S. Macqueen, while H. W. Hattcrsley has H. A. Black as a rival. Hattersley is hitting a terrific ball at the present time, but the New Zealander is a line exponent. J. Ferrier, the defending champion, has S. Thomas, of Pymble, as his first opponent. There are some very line players in his half of tho draw. Still, with possibly a couple of exceptions, the draw will give universal satisfaction. Most of the New Zealanders are in the top half of the draw. Singles Championship. First round: J. H. Brown v. J. T. Gould; C. Glanccy v. E. J. G. Tallis; F. G. Watson v. E. W. Carr; A. French v. G. In connection with Queensland’s entry, the Sydney Morning Herald stated that Sydney enthusiasts welcome tho opportunity of soeing N. Von Nida, the young amateur champion of Queensland. Von Nida is only a stripling, but in addition to possessing the ability to play the strokes, is also endowed with those essential factors—courage and tho will to win. His victory in the Queensland amateur battle showed that, with one down with two play, he played superbly to win the next two holes for the title.
