THE FASTEST TRAIN IN THE WORLD.
Whenever records are brokon by aeroplanes, motor cars and speed boats the news is round the world in ilo time. But we never seem to hear much about the progress of the steam engine. Yet without much fuss, engineers, linesmen, and engine-drivers each year strive to outdo their previous year’s records. Last year the world’s record was broken in England by the Cheltenham Elyer, of the Great Western Railway. This engine hauled her train 77i miles, from Swindon to Paddington, in G 7 minutes, which is an average speed of 69.2 miles an hour. Parts of the journey were covered around 80 miles an hour. By this Tun Great Britain took the record from Canada. The previous record of 6S miles an hour was made on the Canadian Pacific Railway, on the run of 124 miles between Smith’s Falls and Montreal AVcst.
