Flood and Famine in Russia

Crops Ruined and Villages Destroyed

DISQUIETING REPORTS FROM AFFECTED AREAS

Times Cable Received -Thursday, 0.0 p.m. LONDON, March 10. It is reported from Moscow that Bed planes arc bombing the ice piled in the western mouth of the Kuban river in order to release flood waters which are becoming a potential catastrophe, causing incalculable losses. They have ruined thousands of acres of autumn sowings in the rich North Caucasian steppes and destroyed fifty villages. Thousands of Cossacks are homeless. The official bulletin does not mention the number of lives lost, but says special flood fighting commissions have been appointed. Disquieting reports from the famine-stricken districts mention that cattle are dyin.g of starvation and. the peasants in the Volga basin are grinding their seed reserves. Officials declare there is no scarcity of food, but say it has been squandered by the Siberian peasants’ misuse of agricultural and other machinery where they are using the leather belting to sole their boots.
