America's Liquor Laws
ATTEMPT AT AMENDMENT DEFEATED New York Times Broadcast. AVASHINGTON, March 14. The House of Representatives to-day rejected by 227 votes to 187 a demand for immediate consideration of the Beek-Linthicum constitutional amendment, which would give control of the liquor traffic to the 48 States. Though the voto was inconclusive, it aroused great excitement in Congress, and afterwards both “wets” and “drys” asserted that they were pleased. The "wets” polled more votes than they had hoped for, and the “drys” absorbed new confidence in their belief that the antiprohibition movement is still weak. There was one aspect of some significance to the vote. Assuming that representatives reflect tho views of their constituencies, the vote, tabulated by States’ delegations, shows 17 States for consideration of the Beck-Linthicum amendment and 28 against, with three neutral.
