Horticultural Society’s Annual Report

The following report for the year ending January 31, 1932, will be submitted to the annual meeting of tho Palmerston North Horticultural Society on Friday evening:— "The committee has pleasure in recording a successful year despite adverse circumstances. Tho membership is 205, and it is hoped that the 300 mark will be reached during the coming year. The subscription is a very moderato one, and it cutitles members to admission at four shows held during tho year. Members are requested to enrol, at least, one new member, for strong membership means a prosperous society.

‘Tour shows were held during the year and at each, the entries were numerous. There is no doubt the quality of the exhibits is improving, and this resounds to the credit of the many exhibitors. It is pleasing to note that more Palmerston North eiMsens »re becoming exhibitors, indicating a keener interest in the work of the society. The committee thanks exhibitors from near and far, for their generous response and trusts many new exhibitors will come forward during the coming year. At the Chrysanthemum show, a good display was made by the members of the Palmerston North Chrysanthemum Club, and there is every prospect of an excellent display at this year’s show. The Pose show, in November, was considered one of the best staged by the society. In all sections there wero good entries, and tho public expressed, in glowing terms, their appreciation of the beautiful display of colour. The committee desires to express its indebtedness to those ladies and gentlemen who so generously gave their services as judges at the various shows. Theirs was no light task. Mr. T. F. Conway, judge of the garden competition, is deserving of the hearty thanks of tho society.

“Special thanks arc due to the donors of special cash prizes and trophies, without which attractive schedules could not be compiled. Due no doubt, to the stress of tho times, there was a decrease in donations during tho year. The committee is grateful for special donations of any amount. To furnish a background fo-r tho dccorativo section, black Italian cloth was procured during the year, and this considerably enhanced the effective display of tho exhibits in this section

“The committee would express i}< | hearty thanks to Mr. IV. Devine (storage of material), Mr. >■. Grant Sim (lion, auditor), the Press for publicity, and to those ladies who donated cakes for competition, and to the tea rooms.”
