NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK. CANDIDATES AT HAWERA. NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 2. Rains overnight left tho New Plymouth track in excellent order for the work on Saturday morning, when, all tho horses engaged at tho Egmont meeting to-morrow were galloped. All tho fast work took place on the trial grass, which was fast. Silver Fern and Sparkling Morn wore tho only ones to work before breakfast, and they went once round at an easy pace and sprinted home over the last two furlongs. Royal Bengal and tho Ruapapa three-year-old in R. Johnson's stable sprinted down tho straight, both hitting out well. Aravada and Green Patch, who look nono the worso for their recent racing, were restricted to easy pace work. Gold Dawn, finishing on in resolute style, beat Orapai by half a length over five furlongs in 1.1, tho first three furlongs taking 35sec. Though sho had a big pull in tho weights, Gold Dawn did her task well. Orapai, however, was not disgraced. The latter will have the services of H. Gray at Hawera to-morrow. Garrick, with a lightweight up, was ridden right out to register 1.4 4-5 for five furlongs. Merry Way, Glowlight and March Alone finished in that order at tho conclusion of five furlongs in 1.3 1-5. Merry Way appeared to bo going comfortably at tho finish, and, with Gray aboard to-morrow, should go very close to winning the Jubilee Handicap. Lady Quex, under a strong pull, bowled over six furlongs at an easy gait, the last five taking 1.5 4-5. Sho worked very freely all the way. Little Doubt and Singer both appreciated tho sting out of the ground, and hit out really well over seven furlongs in 1.30 4-5. Little Doubt was a length in front at the finish, and was doing it nicely. If he could bo persuaded to dc his best to-morrow ho would be very hard to beat. Singer also shaped well.
Phar Lap ia Training VANCOUVER, Fob. 1. At Agua Caliente, Phar Lap walked three miles, his first light exercise, led iby his trainer, Woodcock, with a pony for company. In addition to special Australian feed Phar Lap drinks a
special brand of bottled water. He also jogged a mile and then did a slow gallop. His work convinced observers that he is not far from race conditions. He is playful and contented in his new surroundings. It is possible Phar Lap may be engaged in Eastern American match races in the summer if successful at Agua Caliente.
