Bursting Tyre Kills Young Man
PECULIAR ACCIDENT Per Press Association. TAUBANGA, Jan. 22. A fatal accident occurred at iho Pongakawa timber mill, owned by Mr. B. B. Phelan. His son, Kichard John Phelan, aged 25, was greasing a truck trailer. The father, who was 150 yards away, heard an explosion liko a gunshot. He ran out and discovered his son lying dazed on the ground, with injuries to the left side of his head. Dr. Bandall, of Te Puke, was summoned and ordered his removal to the Tauranga hospital, where ho was operated on and a large clot of blood was removed from the brain, but haemorrhage of the base of the brain, due to a torn blood vessel, caused death at 2 o’clock this morning. The actual cause of the accident is not known, but the evidence at the inquest indicated that a tyre blow' out and a piece of rubber struck deceased on the head. Deceased was a wellknown tennis and golf player and a Tauranga representative footballer.
