Motor Cycling De Luxe
A Times representative was privileged to have a spin on the Ariel square four motor cycle recently. There is no doubt that the English manufacturers have at last risen to the occasion, and have produced a machine that is a revelation in motor cycling. .Similar m appearance to the single cylinder outlit, the new departure has a monobioe engine with the four pistons set in the shape of a square. The pistons are driven by twin gear coupled crankshafts and the overhead valves arc updated bv a camshaft, the whole being totally'enclosed. Lubrication is of the dry sump type employing two gear
pump.’-. . Tiie machine is built into an excellent, frame and the front forks deserve special mention. A four speed gear box mivos a good range of gears and the ideau handlebars are a decided advantage. The rider was particularly struck with the. riding of die machine. Vibration at low ‘-peed over pot-holed roads was absolutely unnoticeablc and the acceleration was astounding. Starting is obtained by kicking down against, compression and once the engine gels warm the exhaust is practically inaudible, the low hum giving the impression of a terrific reserve of power. Although one might consoler a four-cylin-der rmwcildy for solo work, it "*'s practically impossible to upset the balance by bouncing on the saddle amt rolling the machine, even in gravel, hieoi.nr.y is the motto of the m.w.-iiimi and though the speed will exm-d vl l miles per hour if re quin cl, the peine cousumutiou is between 70 and .VI nub s per gallon. The machine is 000 ox., and is ideal for both side and sidecai work, and at a recent test under oliic ial inspection ran 700 miles in <'N.S minutes. The machine is completed with the usual electric cqjipmoit and n-> fines are very pleasing.
