Car Stalled on Railway Line
rAMILY’S MIRACXJIiOUS ESCAPE
AUCKLAND, Last Night. A level crossing collision took place in Asquith avenue, Mount Albert, about 5 o’clock last evening. Tihc car was practically wrecked, but the only person who suffered injury was a boy aged eight, who miraculously escaped with a scalp wound. The car was in charge of its owner, Mr. C. J. McHardy. Beside him in the front seat was Mrs. McHaidy, and in the back seat were their three sons, aged eleven, eight and six respectively. On reaching the crossing the engine oi the car stalled, and the next moment the occupants became aware that a train was apjSroaching. Mr. and Mrs. McHardy scrambled out of the oar and frantically attempted to drag their children after them. They seized one of the boys, and he pulled hi» nearest brother with him to the roadway. Then with a violent crash the engine struck the car and hurled it to the side of the permanent way, where it crashed against a fence. Mr. and Mts. McHardy rushed over, fears of the worst being uppermost in their minds. To their unbounded relief the remaining boy crawled from the front of the wreckage. He was crying, and it was seen that his head had been injured.
