GOVERNING BODIES MEET. Mr. W. L. Fitzherbert (chairman) presided at last evening’s meeting of tho Palmerston North High Schools’ Board of Governors and Technical School Committee. Other members present were Airs. R. L. C. Aitchison, Messrs W. F. Durward, W. R. Birnic and AI. H. Oram. Airs. AI. Rhodes (principal of the Girls' High School), Air. J. Alurray (rector of tho Boys’ High School) and Air. G. G. Hancox (director of tho Technical School) were also in attendance. Monthly Reports. The monthly reports were as follow : Boys’ High School. Mr. J. Alurray (rector) submitted the following report: — “Roll number 377; average attendance 365. “Air. T. B. Strong and Air. N. T. Lambourno (of tho Education Department) visited the school on August 4 and made inquiries relative to accommodation.
Messrs E. J. Parr and J. B. Alawson were at tho school on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 11 and 12, in connection with the awards of intermediate and higher leaving certificates. “The boys of tho agricultural classes visited the Department of Agriculture’s seed testing station on August 14 and wero shown methods of testing farm seed for germination, etc. “The first XV. have recently played the following annual inter-school games: v. Wanganui Collegiate, won; v. Wanganui Technical College, drawn; v. Wairarapa High School, won. “The second XV. have been successful in two inter-school games, defeating Wanganui Technical College and Dan* cvirkc High School and have also won tho fourth grade Rugby competition. “A boxing class, under tho supervision of Messrs J. Evans and AI. O 'Brien (of the Manawatu Boxing Association) has been meeting weekly during the winter term, there being an enrolment of 50 pupils. “Tho term ends on Friday, August 21, and the third term begins on September 15.” The report was adopted. Girls’ High School. Tho principal of tho Giris’ High School (Airs. AI. Rhodes) submitted the following report:— Roll: Tho roll number is 251, average attendance 235. “Heating: The installation of the new heating system is now completed. The result is very satisfactory. “Swimming bath: The building 01. the cubicles, etc., for the swimming bath is now well on the way, and will be completed in a few days. The Parents’ Association held a very successful dance on August 12 to raise funds towards payment of the debt on the swimming bath.
“General: The Director of Education, accompanied by Air. Lambournc, chief inspector of primary schools, visited tho school on August 3. The Departmental inspectors, Aliss Hetherington and Air. Caradus, visited the school on August 10, 11 and 12 in connection with the award of free places, and the grading of teachers.
“Games: On August 8, teams from Wanganui Girls’ College visited tho school. Our basketball team was successful by a good margin, but the hockey team was defeated, Wanganui taking the Hodder Shield for the year. On August 13, Ecilding Agricultural High School sent down teams. Again our basketball team was successful, while the hockey team was defeated. On Saturday, August 15, teams from Dannevirke High School visited the school. Our basketball team won its match by 29 to 14, but we were beaten at hockey by 6 to nil, and Dannevirke retains the Bennett Cup for another year.” The report was adopted. Technical School.
Air. G. G. Hancox (director) submitted the following report concerning the Technical School: — “Visits: Visits to tho school have been paid by the Superintendent ot Technical Education (Air. La Trobc) on July 24 and by the Director of Education (Air. Strong) and the chief inspector of primary schools (Mr. Lambourne) on August 4.. “Life saving: Last Alonday the president of the Alanawatu branch of the Royal Life Saving Society presented the following awards: Teachers 6, award of merit 1, bronze medallions 12, proficiency certificates 13, elementary certificates 24.
“Games: At Rugby our teams have won tlie fifth and sixth grade competitions. Playing at Feilding our A basketball team defeated the Agricultural High School by 15 —-14, while our fifth grade Rugby team drew with their seconds. Teams from the Levin District High School visited us on July 21, the matches finishing as follow: Basketball, A team, Levin 14, P.N. 13, B team, Levin 9, P.N. 1(3; Rugby, A team, Levin 15 P.N. 14, B team, Levin 0, P.N. 19. The basketball matches against Poxton were. both won by Palmerston North, the A team winning 12—7 and the B team 19—7. The school iuter-club Rugby games wero won by Rangitikei (senior) and Ngapuhi (junior). ■'Dance: The students held a dance on July 31, the proceeds (£lB 2s fid) being handed over to the Central Relief Fund. The Arawa Club held a social on August 7. “Buildings: Tenders for strengthening the building closed with the Public Works Department on August 11. “Classes: In order to meet the requirements of the New Zealand technological examination, approval is sought for commencing a class in painting and decorating if support warrants. “Staff: On August 13, the director attended a deputation to the Prime Minister on matters of educational expenditure." The report Avas adopted, tho director being given the necessary authority to commenco a class in painting and decorating, also a steam engineering class, if sufficient support was assured.
