Hoovers Method to Relieve Unemployed

BIG BUSINESS CHIEF TO ORGANISE. NO DIRECT GOVERNMENT HELP. United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Thursday, 9.50 p.m. WASHINGTON, Aug. 19. President Hoover has appointed Mr. Walter Lifford, president of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, one of America’s largest corporations, to create a super-organisation for meeting the unemployment crisis in the coming winter.

The President thus hopes to avoid the threat of Socialistic legislation. Ho plans to meet the situation through a policy of local initiative with the Federal Government acting as the central co-ordination agency. The President indicated that he will fight every proposal for the enactment of direct relief by the- Federal Government.
