FIVE VICTIMS IN THE ALPS TWO KILLED IN HIMALAYAS
Times Cable. Rcecivod Thursday, 30.15 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 20. The Times’ Geneva correspondent says that the Alps death roll lias been increased by five with tho deaths of two Germans on the Gruyaz glacier and threo Englishmen on the Jungfrau. The latter were a section of a party led by Professor Finch, all being experienced alpinists. They were seen through a telescope to slip. Tho rope broke and they fell into a ravine. A Calcutta messago states that disaster has overtaken Dr. Paul Bauer’s German expedition to Kanchcnjunga, Herr Sehaller and a porter, Pasang, plunging to death from a rock ledge into a crevasse when their rope broke. The tragedy was watched by Dr. Bauer and his companions. Dr. Bauer declares, in a message to the Calcutta Statesman, that the effect upon them was so uncanny that all experienced a momentary impulse to follow tho doomed men. The accident happened at an altitude of 17,000 feet.
