Accountants and Question of Audit
SUPREME COURT COMMENT. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night. Charged with making a false declaration that he personally audited the trust account of H. J. M. Thomson, solicitor, who had been sentenced for theft of £BOOO of clients' money, Law rence M. M. Monteath, public accountant, was acquitted by a jury to-day. It had been stated in the defence that Monteath had relied on another accountant for a certain amount of audit work and Mr. Justice Blair, in summing up, said it might be accepted that an auditor had to have a certain amount of assistance. The mere fact that an auditor used a certain amount of assistance would not make it untrue for him to say he had personally conducted the audit, but the question arose whether the amount of assistance Monteath received, was such as to make it someone else's audit. Apparently all Monteath did was to scrutinise the balances. A verdict of not guilty was returned after three hours’ deliberation.
