Skate Hockey Cup Tourney Continues
RINK TEAM RETAIN TROPHY. The second game of skate hockey to bn held at Palmerston North was staged at Palmerston Theatres (Ltd.) Do Luxe rink in George street last evening, when tho Rink elect, challenged by the “Bing Boys” of Palmerston North, retained the trophy by five goals to one after a fast, exciting game. The teams were as follow: — Rink (blue and gold)-, R. Hoare, C. Gordon, A. J. Craighead, V. L. Absalom (capt.) and 11. R. Roos. Bing Boys (white): L. Martin, E. V. West, J. Lewis, R. Burt and A. Stecre (capt.). Messrs. R. L. C. Aitchison and A. E. Blackbourn were the referees, the outstanding players for the ing Absalom and Craighead, while Burt and Lewis shone in the opposition’s at-’ tacks.
After defeating Feilding by 11 goals to one recently tho rink team appeared to bo a formidable opposition on paper, but the challengers set the pace from the bully-off, and until the latter stages, w r ere perhaps the more aggressive. Martin, the white’s goalie, Tevealcd his prowess when he saved a shot on his knees. Stecre cleared and West was a-way to keep the Rink men o n the run. The blues then swung into action and tho first shot went home only to be disallowed. Lewis next attempted for the Bing Boys to miss narrowly. Craighead was prominent at this stage and Absalom, brilliant on defence and attack, led onslaughts almost continually to tho visitors’ net. Each movement, however, was nipped in the bud just as success appeared imminent. . It was the white representatives that drew first blood, Burt breaking away from a melee to shoot neatly: Bing Boys 1, Rink 0. The interval was called immediately afterward. The second spell produced fast, gruelling hockey and, two minutes after tho lemons Absalom started his scoring account to run up five goals m 10 minutes. There were too many ‘ ‘fullbacks” in the whites last line of defence and the result proved disastrous for the new club. Tho whistle sounded with tho final scores: De Luxe Rink 5, Bing Boys 1. A Wellington representative _ team will play at Palmerston North this Saturday evening. On Wednesday next the United Club will play a challenge match against the Rink team for the trophy.
