Relief for Primary Producers

SUGGESTIONS PROM SOUTHLAND Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Last Night. An appeal for immediate Telief for the farming community, with suggestions as to how this might bo achieved, was made in a remit adopted by the Southland provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union yesterday. The remit, which came from the Waikaka Valley branch, appealed for: “1. Immediate relief for the primary producers in the following ways: (a) Partial de-rating of farm lands; (b) lenient treatment of farmers who have fallen into arrears with local body taxation; (c) consideration to be given by the State and other public lending institutions to tho urgent need for the reduction of interest being given to mortgaged farmers; (d) extension as far as possible of reduced rates of interest; (e) every effort to be made by manufacturers, traders and others to reduce costs to a minimum and to pass on to the consumer all such reductions. “2. Overseas borrowing to be reduced to a minimum. “3. Public expenditure to be reduced. “4. More productive work for unemploved relief. “5. Amendment of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act to allow for compulsory conciliation and voluntary arbitration. “6. Reduction of tariff duties on necessities of life and production. “7. Encouragement in every possible way of trade within the Empire.”
