Fifty players took part in the Labour Party's weekly euchre tourney. The winners were: Mrs. Black .1, Mrs Butters 2, Mrs. Charles 3; Mr. Black 1, Mr. L. Beck 2. Mr. McLaggan 3. Those to qualify for the 'gold watches -wore Mcsdamcs L. Jones, McLaggan, Hein* mingsen, B, Andrews, Misses Thompson, E. Johnson, Messrs. T. Moore, T. Leen, V. McEwen, C. Pritchard, It. Sands and It. Buckniau.

At a meeting of the Shannon Unemployment Committee a proposal was submitted by Mr. S. Anderson for the completion of the road between BuckIcy and Koputaroa, the work to be carried out under the No. 5 scheme. It was stated that approximately one mile of road remained to bo formed. To assist the work the owners of the property the road would pass had promised to give the necessary land. and settlers had offered to loan the teams. There would bo no cost for transporting the men out to the work. It was decided to place the proposal before the Horowhenua County Council. The fancy dress ball held by the Mangaorc Social Club drew a large attendance, including many Shannon residents. The array of fancy dresses attracted a groat deal of attention, many being of original design. The vote for the best eolstumes and the most origina resulted as follows: Miss Joyce (Dragon Fly) and Mr, Nieol (Spanish), and Miss Betty Blackwood (Mephistopheies) and Mr. H. L. Taylor (baby-). An amusing interlude occurred when Mr. J. Campbell (the vicar) “christened" the baby. Mr. A. Blackwood thanked the guests for their attendance and stated that a children's fancy dress would bo hold at Mangaorc on'September 4. The music, which added much to the enjoyment. of the evening, was supplied by Mr. and Mrs. Parcel]. A sumptuous supper was provided by- the ladies. An enjoyable afternoon was spent by members of the Presbyterian Church at the residence of their minister (.Rev. Mr. Williamson) on Wednesday. There was an excellent attendance, in spite of the inclement weather. An interesting competition was won by Mcsdamcs Sandisou and K. Mitchell. Community singing, Jed by Mrs. Parcel], and games were much enjoyed. During the afternoon a play reading, “New Year’s Eve," by Mcsdamcs Parcoll and V. Mitchell, was much appreciated. A brisk sale of sweets .cakes, etc., in aid of the church, augmented the funds considerably.

There wa.s a crowded house for the Shannon school concert, held in the Druids’ hall on Thursday evening. The first half of the programme was given by- the children, a team of Foxton District High School girls assisting with an exhibition of physical drill and a dance, “The Pipes of Pan." The programme was a.s follows: Tiny tots, nursery rhymes and rhythmic games; primer 3, rhythmic games; standard 2, Indian song; standard 1, rhythmic dances; standards 5 and 6, Morris stick dance; standard 2 and 3 girls, canoo drill; standards 4 and 5, songs; Foxton D.H.S. girls, physical drill; Jean Corlett and Joy Simes, Irish song and dance; standards 4, 5 and 0 boys, physical drill; standard 3, chanties; standard G, haka and Maori Song; Foxton D.H.S. girls, dance; school choir, “Good Night" chorus. The second half of the programme was contributed by the Foxton Benedicts, and consisted of choruses, vocal solos and concerted numbers, and local hits. Interspersed in these items wero a clever dramatic recital by Miss Jean Stevenson and an Irish jig by Miss Ada Roorc.
