MAGISTRATE’S COURT

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over the monthly sitting of the Magistrate s Court in Foxton on Thursday. Civil Cases A case which occupied the attenLon of tho Court for some time was that in which T. Hunt, builder (Mr Sinclair) proceeded against J. (Mr. Grant) on a claim for £4S 18/2, being balance of cost of fitting a butcher’s shop. After the facts had been reviewed at length, the matter of the date of an order given by the health inspector was deferred for confirmation, and in view of this the Magistrate reserved his decision, intimating that judgment would be delivered at Palmerston North. Judgment by default was entered for plaintiffs in the following cases: W. R. Takarua v. A. K. T. Love, £6, costs £1 18/6; S. Mattar v. H. J. Brown, £4 14/5 ,costs £1 3/6; H. E. Garbott v L. Sim, £1 6/3, costs 32/; H. C. Ball v. K. Coley, £1 5/, costs 8/. Licensing Breach,

J. M. Shorthousc, licensee of the Post Office hotel, Poston was charged with selling liquor after hours. Constable Lincoln in evidence stated that ho saw accused supplying liquor to a young man, Edgar Eouald Coley, at 10 p.m. on August 0. Shorthousc, who pleaded guilty, was lined £2, with costs 10/. Shorthousc was also charged with supplying liquor to Coley, a person under the age of 21 years. Accused pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given by Constable Lincoln and E. R. Coley. In view of the fact that Coley would be 21 in a few days’ time, the ease was dismissed. Traffic Breaches C. Cane, charged with operating a motor lorry carrying a greater load than the license provided for, did not appear and was fined £5, with costs 15/. R. Mason, charged with operating a lorry without being in possession of a heavy traffic license, pleaded guilty and was fined £2, with costs 15/. Mason also pleaded guilty to a charge of driving a lorry bearing an indication disc relating to an. expired license, and on this count was fined £2, with costs 15/. Charged with operating a motor vehicle without a driver’s license, C. W. Doyd was fined 5/, with costs 12/.

“BROWN OWL’’ FARE WELLED The parents of the local Brownies, together with the members of the corps, held a farewell party in the Presbyterian schoolroom on Wednesday afternoon, when Miss Poole (Brown Owl) w'as the guest of honour. Following the serving of a dainty afternoon tea, Verna Sutton, on behalf of tho Brownies, presented Miss Poole with a book, while Shirley Barron and Zena Fraser each presented the guest with a pretty bouquet. The children subsequently demonstrated to the parents what they had learned whilo in the corps, and games were also played. Prior to tho conclusion of a most enjoyable afternoon, Mrs. Moore, secretary of the Girl Guides’ committee, called upon Mrs. Barron on behalf of the parents to bid farewell to the Brown Ovl. Mrs. Barron expressed the regret which all felt

at tho coming departure of their guest. Although Miss Poole may often have thought that the parents showed a lack of interest in tho work of the Brownies, she was assured that such was not the case. They all appreciated very much tho good work done by Miss Poole, who by her patience and sympathy had become most popular with the children. On behalf of the parents she wished Miss Poole success and happiness in her new sphere. Miss Poole suitably replied. Social Afternoon Members of tho Methodist Ladies' Guild held their monthly meeting at the residence of Mrs J. F. Riches in Russell Street on Wednesday afternoon when a most enjoyable time was spent by the large number present. During the afternoon two interesting competitions were held, the winners being Mcsdamcs W. Walker and W. T. Young respectively. General business in connection with tho Guild was discussed, after which a delightful afternoon tea was served by tho hostesses, Mesdames Riches and T. Hughes.
