The Prime Minister wrote to the High Court Judges and invited them to volunteer a 25 per cent, reduction of their salaries. The Chief Justice (Sir Frank Gavan Duffy) and Justices Starke and Evatt declined,, but expressed their willingness to forego £4 4/ a day travelling expenses when away from their own States. The other three Judges agreed to the salary cut. Tho objectors’ reason was that they were not prepared to weaken that section of tho constitution which provided that nothing must be done to diminish judges’ salaries during their continuance of office.
