Big Ohakune Sawmill Burnt

Per Press Association. OHAKUNE, Aug. 11. A disastrous fire occurred this morning in Goldfinch and Co.’s sawnr I, Ohakune Junction. The alarm was received at 3 a.m. Willing workers formed a bucket brigade and after a big fight managed to save the timber stacks around the mill. It was impossible to save the mill, which was completely destroyed. A number of trucks on the rails, containing seasoned timber ready ft • consignment to Napier, was burnt. The insurances were £2OOO, but it is believed the loss will bo very considerable. Cutting at. the mill was m jrly completed and it was expected to close down in some four or five months’ time. The fire is particularly unfortunate, happening at the present time as it .will mean more men o-t of work at a time when there are an exceptionally large number of unemployed in the district.
