Secondary Schools Meet at Basketball
GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL GAINS VICTORY OVER WANGANUI GIRLS’ COLLEGE
On Saturday morning on the High School courts, Palmerston North Girls High School met and defeated a Wanganui Girls College team in their annual match at basketball. The home team thus turned the tables on the visitors who had held tho victory ovc-r a number of years. While Wanganui had a distinct advantage in height, tho High School girls showed a superior, knowledge of the game and their passing was splendid. The Wanganui girls wero handicapped in not being ablo to make good use of their opportunities of shooting goals. For Palmerston North B. McDonald (captain) at centre and At. Simmons (forward) were tho outstanding players. Tho half time score was B—48 —4 in favour of Girls’ High School, J. Spilman (2) M. Simmons (3) and D. Carlisle (3) scoring for the home side, and B. Richardson (2) and N. Porritt (2) for the visitors. Wanganui made a valiant effort in the second spell, but the local girls maintained the supremacy and won 17—11. Additional goals wero scored for High School by M. Simmons (5), D. Carlisle (2) and J. Spilman (2), and for Wanganui by B. Richardson (3), N. Clark (2) and M. Corby (2). Mrs. Cleland (Wanganui) controlled ' the game for the first spell, and Miss Hume (Palmerston North) for the second spell. Following the match the visitors were entertained at morning tea. The teams were as follow: Palmerston North (blue): B. MeDonand (captain), E. Sinclair, A. Edwards, M. Simmons, J. Spilman, D. Carlisle, fo. Andrew, D. Meder, J. Brown. Wanganui (blue and yellow): B. Richardson, N. Porritt, N. Clark, M. Corby, F. Sharpe, A. Rees-Jone3 (captain), J. Grainger, G. BTennan, A. Eowo.
WANGANUI GAINS VICTORY AT < HOCKEY
In the afternoon the annual hockey contest for the Hodder Shield took place between the two schools, the visitors on this occasion winning the match by three goals to nil. The visitors were the stronger side and showed bettor combination than their opponents. Tho High School team, ' which had a number of comparatively inexperienced girls, nevertheless made quite a good showing. The teams were as follow: — Palmerston North: F. Hastings (captain), M. Billens, M. Currie, B. Ross, P. Davidson, B. Lovelock, T. Bose, B. MacDonald, S. Croad, P. Edwards, M. Ammon. Wanganui: J. Grainger (captain), A. MoPhail, H. Wood, B. Allen, I. Duncan, J. Stroud, E. Lowe, F. Anderson, E. Chatfield, A. Sharpe, B. Richardson. High School, attacking vigorously, very nearly scored in the opening stages of the game, but were stopped by Wananui’s left wing. Three successive attacks in fornt of the goal were repulsed by High School, who managed to * get the ball away down-field. Brilliant work by H. Wood in evading the School backs resulted in her centring. to P. Allen, who scored foT Wanganui with a Hard shot. -High School took .play to the other end'again and were , conceded a corner, but the Wanganui de-
fence was too strong and half time sounded with Wanganui leading by one goal to nil. In the second spell Wanganui continued to press, and after strong attacks just missed scoring, lhe High School forwards made evory effort, but failed to pass the visitors’ defence, and in particular A. Sharpe. In the final stages School played ■with renewed vigour and pressed their opponents hard, but failed to net. After a' lightning attack P. Allen got through and just before time registered a third goal for Wanganui, the final score being 3 0. Mr. Amos controlled the game. The visitors were hospitably, entertained and returned to Wanganui in the evening.
