The Otago and Wairarapa Rugoy representatives met at Carisbrooke today in fine, dull weather. The turf was in good order, and there were YUUU spectators. Wairarapa kicked off and three minutes after the start Bush, the Otago full-back, ran up to send the ball in to Bathgate, Fookes and Giles, who transferred to Allen, the latter scoring wide out. Bush failed to convert: Otago 3, Wairarapa 0. The Otago forwards kept play m the Wairarapa territory. The visitors were thrice penalised for off-side play, but Sontcr’s kicks went wide. The lastnamed outpaced Roach and scored at the corner. Bush’s kick missed: Otago G, Wairarapa 0. . , The game at this stage was exciting and full of incident. Bush had a pot at goal from 50 yards out, which narrowly missed. From a scrum on the visitors’ line, the ball shot over tho line. S’rnon dived round and scored. Souter failed with the kick: Otago 9, Wairarapa 0. . Otago kept Wairarapa hemmed id their own twenty-five. Fumbling by the Otago backs let Wairarapa away, and after a nippy pieco of passing Trapp scored at the corner. Fitzgerald just missed with tho kick: Otago 9, Wairarapa 3. Otago came down again, but Roach sent them back and play hung at halfway. Otago had the hotter of tho game throughout this spell in all departments. At half-time the scored was unchanged. The Otago backs launched a series of passing bouts on rosuming play, but Stringfcllow shifted play by a good breakaway. Bush’s handling had been uncertain and trouble was narrowly averted when ho failed to field W. Clarke’s kick. The Wairarapa backs got into their stride for the first time, and B. Clark was within a few yards of the line when lie knocked the ball on.

Wairarapa were infusing more dash into the play than in the first spell, but there was not the cohesion betwocn the backs and the forwards that Otago showed. Tho home side wero still doing more of tho attacking. At this stage Wilson retired injured and was

replaced in the Otago pack by Watts. The Wairarapa backs lookod dangerous in a passing bout, but Stringfellow ran right across the field and spoilt a movement, Finlayson, leading the Otago forwards, brought play back to half-way. Play was now of a scrambling nature, with occasional rallies by Otago. Otago were pressing for the greater part of tho spell, Roach saving Wairarapa timo and again by his sure fielding and good kicking. In the closing stages, Fitzgerald retired because of an injury. Brilliant passing by Otago after a short punt from a freo kick ended in Allen scoring. Bush failed with the kick, and shortly afterwards the game ended with the score as follows: Otago 12, Wairarapa 3. POVERTY BAY DEFEAT THAMES VALLEY. GISBORNE, Aug. 8. The annual match, Tirnnru v. Waitaki Boys’ High Schools, was played to-day in the presence of a large attendance, Waitaki winning by 14 points to 3. The game was much below tho standard of previous contests, but the visitors thoroughly deserved their win, boing superior to Tirnaru in all departments. Timaru had the advantage of "weight in the forwards, but they failed to make use of it and the visiting pack, a fast, hard working one, gave a good display in tho loose and secured the greater number of scrums. The Waitaki backs handled soundly, this being the deciding factor in the game. Timaru a fow weeks ago gave a groat display against St. Andrew’s College, but to-day they were sluggish in all their movements, the backs receiving no assistance from tho forwards. The tackling on both sides was solid and there wore a fair number of injuries owing to the hardness of the ground. Tries were scored for the winners by Dick, Collins and Laney, Borric converting one and kicking a penalty goal. Thomson scored for the losers. The second fifteen drew eleven all.
