FINDING WORK FOR MEMBERS.

A special meeting of the unemployment committee of the Returned Soldiers’ Association was called recently to review the position in respect to unemployment amongst ex-service men. It was reported to the meeting that in all 25 men had been placed with the City Council in connection with the “Poppy Day” schemo and that 24 were still so engaged. The appeal for subsidised work made had not been as successful as had been anticipated, but it was mentioned that in all 21 men had been employed on subsidised private work, wnile somo few men had been provided with employment by private employers unsubsidised.

The position so far as unemployment is concerned was considered to be most acute, and it was decided to request the City Council to allow the association to replace the men now employed by the council, so as to spread the work as equitably as possible between all seeking employment. It was also decided to concentrate further on private works, which the association is prepared to subsdise, and by this mean 3 it. is hoped to obtain further work for those who will be taken off the City Council works.

It has been arranged by the association that men who have been employed under the “Poppy Day” scheme will not have to qualify for employment under the No. 5 scheme provided they have already served their 10 days ’ qualification. The committee expressed the _ hopo that the appeal for private subsidised work would be well answered.
