Escape From Flames

FAMILY IN FARMHOUSE FATHER RESCUES CHILDREN NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 1. The occupants of a farmhouse at Oaonui, three miles from Opunakc, had a narrow escape when the building- caught lire early in the morning and was destroyed, The house was owned and occupied by Mr. M. Barrett. Mr. and Mrs. Barrett and four members of the family were asleep in the house, and Mr. Barrett was awakened by the smoke and the crackling of the fire. He roused the family and Mrs. Barrett and two others hurriedly escaped. Mr. Barrett had to break one of the front windows to rescue two of the children, aged 12 and five years respectively. The lire spread so rapidly that Mr. Barrett was unable to save anything. The house was insured in the Commercial Union office for £250, and there was also a cover of £llO on the furniture.
