A man in a misguided attempt lo assist an English railway company m tluexecution of it 3 by-laws pulled tbe communication cord of a non-smoking u. riago because somebody was smokin*. He was lined for his trouble. The story recalls the caso of a pa*-sono-er who was similarly annoyed. X 1850 a Scottish railway company uoSL an action by a travollc. - was annoyed by the smell tobacco cominv from another carnage during a journey from Glasgow to Edinburgh. He complained to the guard who -was not able to find the offender, but as tho passenger swore that tho annoyance continued throughout the journey, tl e court awarded him £8 6s 8d damages. English railway companies at that time had one first-class smoking carnage on each train, which was called the divan.”
