Bank Clerk Loses £IOOO at Races

STOLEN MONEY ALL GAMBLED IN ONE DAY. LONDON, July 1. A young Barrhead bank clerk who stole £IOOO and lost it in oho day in betting on horses and dogs was sentenced to lour months' imprisonment, at the sheriff court at Greenock today. lie was . Hugh Campbell, aged twenty-three, who pleaded guilty to stealing £IOOO drum the branch office of the Union Bank of Scotland, Main street, Barrhead. Mr. W. G. Young, the fiscal, said that on May 23 the agent made the usual balance and found everything in order. Campbell was given somo money to place in the safe after the balance, and when doing so he abstracted a bundle of notes to the value of £IOOO.

Campbell disappeared, and about a week later walked into Glasgow Central Police Office and gave himself up. He had six shillings and niepence m his pocket. The fiscal also said that, according to Campbell's statement to the police later no owed a bookmaker £SO, and had taken the money to pay the debt, and by further betting he hoped to recoup his loss. Ho went to Ayr races the day after he took the money, and lost £BOO on horses. Ho returned to Glasgow in the evening with about £2OO, which ho lost at a dog race mooting. Ho tiffin went home, told his mother what ho had done, disappeared. His mother advised him/ when ho returned a week later, to give himself up to the police. His brother accompanied him to the Central Police Office, Glasgow. An agent for Campbell said the offence was not ono that had been planned out carefully. ‘ ‘lt was simply done in a moment of unpremeditated recklessness,” ho said. Sheriff Hendry said the circumstances in connection with the charge warranted him in restricting the sentence. He had pleaded guilty to a serious charge, and the restricted sentence ho would pass was one of four months’ imprisonment
