Shield Hockey
CANTERBURY DEFEAT OTAGO. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 1. For the third tirno this season Canterbury were called upon to defend their title to the New Zealand Hockey Challenge Shield. Otago were tho challenging tearm The match was played on °the Oval at Lancaster park, starting at 1.30 p.m., before tho representative Rugby match. Canterbury won by five goals to one. When Canterbury and Otago met for the shield last year, the match was drawn, after a very hard and even game. The outstanding player in the Otago team is the captain and centre-half, B, Mprris, is one of the best and most experienced players in the Dominion. Ho learned his hockey in the same club as the Canterbury captain, S. Bell, both playing in tho same teams, from the fifth grade to the senior for the Selwyn Club. Both also played together for New Zealand. Otago have not yet held the New Zealand Shield. Mr. A. E. Blackbourn, of Palmerston North, is tho referee selected by the Wanganui Hockey Association for tho Nordern Cup match, Wanganui (challengers) v. Mamawatu.
