Saturday's Cycle Road Race Events
PROFESSIONAL AND AMATEUR Despite the unsettled weather conditions prevailing on Saturday both the professional and amateur road cycling races were conducted, W. Collins winning the former and N. Hyde the latter. The amateur event constituted the twelfth series for tho Red Seal and Ilendie trophies and was conducted by the Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club over a course from Rangitikei street to Sandon and return, it was a good race. N. Hyde improved upon his third placing of last week; and won by a very narrow margin from Jensen, who has been showing good form, with E. Walker a length further back third. D. Hayes and J. Casey, who started off tho same mark, rode a dead heat to share the honours for fastest, time and fourth place. N. Dixon fell at the Awahuri bridge on tho return journey as the result of a skid. Detailed results .were as follow: —
N. Hyde (lOmin), 42 in in 40 l-sscc 1 L. Jensen (lOmin), 42min. 40 3-ssec 2 E. Walker (12min), 44min 41sec .. 3 Fastest time: D. Hayes and J. Casey, 4lmin 31 3-ssec. Also started: L. Day (17min), A. Mutch (Stalin), N. Dixon (Ttanin), D. Hayes (7tanin) and J. Casey (7§min). The points table now reads as follows: E. Lawrence 24, N. Hyde 20, D. Hayes 171, E. Walker 15, J. Casey 141,, C. Hyde 7, L. Tantrum 7, A. Mutch 5* N. Dixon 5, L. Jensen 3, R. Sowcrby 1, E. Bloomfield 1. The professional event, over a course just less than 50 miles, saw four competitors face the Manawatu Counties' Cash Cycling Club’s starter. Details were:— W. Collins (Imin) 130 min 40see .. 1 A. Ganderton (38min) 172 min .... 'j J. Christensen (38min) 180 min .. 3 Also started: A. L. Jeffries (6min). The cyclists had a hard ride in the rain and 'cold wind, the weather being markedly inclement. The Tiders finished bespattered with mud. This was the first severe test for the forthcoming big events of the professional season, the course being from Terrace End to Ashhurst, Raumai, Colyton and Feilding, back to Terrace End. Collins, off virtual scratch, won easily in excellent time. Jeffries was going well on the way out when he took the wrong turning at Ashhurst and ended up at Bunnythorpe, instead of at Eaumai. The points now stand as follow: Collins 52, Rosanoski 44, Jeffries 34, McGill 9, Christensen 9, Ganderton 4, Eaton 3, Larsen 1.
