Hidden in Church
SOCIALISTIC TEACHINGS. LONDON, April 23. Mr. Fred Bower, the stonemason poet, who formerly was a goldminer in Australia, has revealed how he placed a Socialist newspaper and a Socialist manifesto under the foundation stone of the Liverpool Cathedral. Shortly before the stone was set in position by King Edward in 1904, Bower, who was then employed on the Cathedral as a mason, placed under it a tin box containing a copy of the ‘Clarion," an article by Blatchford, entitled “God and my Neighbour,” and the manifesto. ‘ k Within the shade of this edilice there are slums,” the manifesto read, “but these will pass away, and you will be living in a better land and through the efforts of those who arc dead and gone.” At the time Bower confided the secret to Mr. Philip Snowden, who advised him to wait until a few tons of granite had been placed over the stone before telling the world. “I have waiter! 27 years,” said Bower, whose world wanderings have included Canada and Australia. He has in turn been gold digger, lumberman, and stowaway.
