He was the dean of American bankers and the third richest man in America, hut was one of the least known of the Wall Street figures. His fortune is estimated at as high as 500,000,000 dollars. He had attended a directors’ meeting of one of the 29 large corporations—on the whole of the boards of which he served—on Thursday when he became ill. One of the anecdotes told about him is that he made his son a millionaire by giving him the twentydollar gold pieces he received as a fee at each of the directors’ meetings he attended.
