The “Enterprise’s” Famous Boom
In certain yacht clubs a 'strange story is to be hoard, states an English paper. It is to the effect that Enterprise ’s famous boom was the invention (of an English shipwright. What is ,'morc, the inventor is said to be a native of Gosport, where Shamrock was built. Stranger still, it is said that the idea was offered to the builders of Shamrock, who, however, were unable to adopt it because they were building the challenger at a contract price. The climax of the story is that the syndicate owning the Enterprise acquired the right to make use of the idea at a fee of ten shillings. Racing yachtsmen will have noticed that in the recent momentous agreement with America the use of this boom is not forbidden. It proved so very efficient tin Eterpriso that it is likely to be adoiptedi n racing vessels of the largest class. And here there is a note of hope for the inventor, for he is said to have had at least the luck to patent his idea—this nearly-exiled child of his brain,- . ■ - ~
