Darby and Joan Tragedy
JUDGE AND WIFE DIE. Regarded by people whom they knew as a typical Darby and Joan, Sir Francis and Lady Greenwell, wdioso marriage took place in 1884, recently died within 14 hours of each other under tragic circumstances at their home at Lanchester, Durham. Sir' Francis, who was 78, was chairman of Durham Quarter Sessions and country court judge for the Ncwcastjc-on-Tync district. He was called to tho Bar in 1877, was Recorder of Durham 1883 to 1924, and had been a countq court- judge since 1895. Sir Francis and Lady Greenwell were nearly always seen together on public occasions. Lady Greenwell invariably accompanied Sir Francis by motor-car to the numerous courts he attended, and then returned home. Only a week bofore the tragic events the couple were present at a commemoration service in Durham. Sir Francis was engaged on his official duties until a day or so later. Both became ill about the same time, Lady Greenwell having a severo attack of pneumonia. Sir Francis died first, and his wife succumbed without knowing that he was already dead.
