WORK OF COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of tnc Terraco End school committee was held lasr evening, Mr. W. B.' Cameron presiding. Also present woro Messrs R. Luke, N. H. Nash, G. G. Priest (secretary), W. L. Macpherson (treasurer), H. Smith, J. Davidson and the headmaster, Mr. A. W. Thompson. In his report the headmaster stated that tho roll number was 684 and that the average attendance ovfir the montn was 638.4. There were 20 pupils from Hawke's Bay attending, but were not included in the roll. It was interesting to note that the, hospital class continued satisfactorily and that since its inception on August 1,. 1930, 75 pupils had boon enrolled. Miss Gloyn, sportsmistress of tho Napier Girls' High School, visited the school twice during the month and had given- demonstrations of tho latest methods in physical culture. Her work was most instructive and had been enjoyed very much by both, teachers and children. Mr. Thompson had ploasure in reporting another successful swimming season. The amount placed to the credit of tho pupils in the savings bank during the month was £2O 18s 9d, while there were now 175 contributors. As desired hy the Russell street school committee the pupils of this school wore granted tho use of the baths for their swimming sports. In pursuance of the Education Board’s instructions, Mr. Hodge, board architect, accompanied uy two Inspectors from tho Public Works Department, inspected the school buildings and it was pleasing to report that the officials deemed the buildings safe. Minor architectural alterations were, however, recommended.

Mr. Cameron, in referring to the success of the swimming sports, stated that the thanks of the committee were due to two teachers, Messrs Schwarz and Prior, who so enthusiastically coached the pupils. He also thought that the committee should send a letter of congratulation to Cyril Baigcnt, an outstanding swimmer and one of the best so far produced in tho school. As the years passed, tho school was producing hotter swimmers, indicating that there was some great enthusiasm for the welfare of the pupils.

Mr. Priest then read an article from the School Journal. by the DirectorGeneral of Education, Mr. T. B. Strong, in which he asked the pupils of the Dominion schools to donate three months’ pocket money towards the earthquake funds. “In view of the large amount collected in the Dominion do you think it was necessary for the Director-General to make such an appeal?” queried one member. The others, however, stated that they felt the letter was commendable. It was decided to • endorse tho letter and also a circular from tho Education Board which outlined suggestions for the collection of the contributions. Mr. Cameron stated .that it was tho intention of Mr. Thompson to placo music tuition a little more prominently in the syllabus of the school. A qualified teacher would conduct the classes. Mr. Thompson was given the necessary authority to purchase a number or gramophone records. Unemployment Work.

In reporting on the work being done on the school grounds under the No. 5 unemployment scheme, Mr. Macpherson said'that tho committee mado application for 12 men, but that on the day set down for commencing the work 30 men arrived to undertake the work. Tho gardens had since ceen put in order, shrubberies ■ trimmed, fences improved, fennel in the pit cut back and an area of about an. aero at the back of the playing area converted to use, while a large quantity of spoil from a mound had been used to top-dress the school area. It was very satisfactory to see the grounds being put in order without any heavy expenditure to the committee. To date tho committee had spent under £5 in material, and approximately £323 in wages, while there would possibly be employment for another month. Mr. Cameron stated that in future years the improvements . would be a great asset to the school and would give the school some of the finest grounds in Palmerston North. Dental Clinic. In regard to dental clinic matters, Mr. Cameron said that, after negotiations, a suitable room was obtained in tho College street school. Kuitablo appliances were installed and at present two nurses were employed and were attending to tho children, more particularly to the pupils at Ilokowhitu who had been neglected for 12 months. At present in. the city there were 2400 children eligiblo to receive attention. The work in the dental clinics was of a very high standard, far ahead of thar of previous years and he felt that, even if tho respective schools were allotted up to £l2 annually for maintenance costs, they would be receiving sufficient, benefits to warrant the expenditure. Messrs Davidson and Luke wore appointed a visiting committee.
