In the House yesterday Mr W. P. Endcan, member for Parnell, was granted six days’ leave of abscnco on account of a bereavement in.his family. Mr. A. E. Orgias, clerk of the Poliangina County Council, is at present in hospital in Palmerston North, is reported to be making satisfactory progress towards recovery. • f/„ Visitors welcomed at yesterday’s meeting of the Palmerston North Citizens’ Lunch Club included Messrs 0. Brahno (Nukualofa), G. Allan (Masterton) G. S. Allan and Dr. Shore (Wellington).

The retirement is announced of Mr Joseph Holmes, postmaster at To Awamutu for the past two years. Mr Holmes lias almost completed 40 years of service and retjres on superannuation.

A London cable message says that Mr Philip Snowden, Chancellor of the Exchequer, underwent a minor operation ■ yesterday. The patient bo rev the operation very well, according to a bulletin that was issued.

The Terrace End School Committee last evening passed a vote of thanks to Mr. Arthur, school caretaker, who had carried out. capably many duties in connection with the unemployment labour at present working on school ground improvements.

At the meeting of the Manawatu A. and P. Association yesterday, the president (Mr. L. B. Wall) made mention of Mr. H. Akers’ impending departure for the Old Country and it was decided to send him a letter expressing the association’s good wishes, the hope of a pleasant journey and a safe return to New Zealand.

The death occurred yesterday at the Lewisham hospital, Wellington, after a serious operation of Mr James Robert Raw, aged 59, general secretary of the National Council of Licensed Victuallers. Mr Raw came to New Zealand 35 years ago and was engaged in commerce in Auckland and Rotorua. At the latter place he was chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and prominent in other local activities. Fourteen years ago he became organiser for tlio licensed trade. He was interested in freemasonry and was a member of the Rotary Club and a liberal supporter of philanthropic and charitable organisations. Ho is survived by a wife, two daughters and a son who is completing his medical studies in England.
