Lieutenant-Colonel Thoms, of the New Zealand Staff Corps, arrived today to -take over the command of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps vice Brigadier Orpen Palmer retired. The new commandant controls the most extraordinary volunteer force m tho world consisting of British, American, Russian and Chinese'companies. It is supportedl by the municipal council to the extent of £40,000 per annum. This is the first occasion on which command has been given to a colonial officer.
