Kairanga County's Sympathy. Before the commencement of business at the monthly meeting of tao Kairanga County Council yesterday, the chairman, Mr. J. Batchelar moved and Mr. D. Collis seconded the following motion, which was carried by members standing in silence:—“That this Council convey to the Mayors of Napier and Hastings its deepest sympathy with them and the bereaved, the injured, the homeless and all who have suffered loss through tho disastrous earthquake which overwhelmed the Hawke’s Bay district last Tuesday. Plight Lieutenant Stedman paid a visit to Palmerston North yesterday while en route to Napier, making a land, ing at tho Milson aerodrome. While the plane was being refuelled by Mr Bob Linklater the pilot visited the city to obtain urgent medical supplies and left half an hour later on his journey Long distance traffic is now easing off on the Palmerston North-Napicr highway and the long line of M.A.A. relief cars has dwindled considerably. The demand for cars to do general work, however, is still apparent and lady drivers arc required to relieve the men folk who have rendered untiring service for the past week. The road patrol established to prevent sightseers visiting the stricken area is still being maintained and it is also announced that all lorries travelling through the Gorge must have a permit, even if only proceeding as fa; as Woodville. Tho attention of the general public is drawn to an advertisement appearing on page 1 of this issue. With a desire to render the greatest possible immediate assistance to its clients the Public Trust Office has arranged for the business of the Napier branch to be temporarily' conducted from Dannevirkc. A skeleton stall is being left in Napier to deal with inquiries on the spot and the situation of tho temporary Napier office will be advertised in -the press later when the authorities have decided what buildings in tho stricken city are to be utilised for Government services.
