Earthquake Relief at Ashhurst

A well attended public meeting was held in tho Town Hall on Monday evening, some 70 or SO people> being present, representative of tho district. Tho convenor of tho meeting, Rov. H. B. Goertz, was voted to the chair and explained the purposo for ■which, t e mooting was called. A strong executive committee was set up to deal with various matters in connection with the relief of sufferers in the earthquake area. . It was decided to open subscription lists throughout tho district, Air. G. R. Tayor being placed in charge and appointed treasurer of the fund to be raised. The district was sub-divided into sections and canvassers for each appointed. The lists will be returnable to the treasurer within a fortnight and the various amounts paid into -the public account to form part of the national fund that is being administcicd by the Public Trustee. AVith regard to offers of fruit, vegetables, meat and other such provisions, it was decided that those who wish to givo these things, be asked to communicate with Air. J. A. AlcDonell or the Rev. H. B. Goertz, who, keeping in constant touch with the Palmerston Relief Committee, will be able to inform donors when these things arc required. Such produce may be left at the Corner store, Ashhurst, Air. C. V. Ciochctto having generously offered the use of his store as a depot and also to provide the necessary transport. who aro willing to receive refugee guests into their homes are asked to forward their names and whether male or female adult guests or children arc desired. A list will be compiled embodying these offers and if, and when, the necessity arises for such billeting, they will be notified.

A ladies’ committee was also set up to deal with the making of clothing, and to provide baker’s small goods, etc. All ladies willing to cook scones, cakes, etc., are asked to send these things to the empty shop immediately opposite the Corner store and adjoining Airs. Borrett’s residence, on Tuesdays and Fridays of each week, between the hours of 10 to 12 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m., when one of the committee will be present to receive and pack the goods. Airs. Sixtus of Ashhurst, has provided Alaterial for underclothing, and will be glad of offers of help for the purpose of making it up. It was reported to the meeting that Alessrs Smith Bros., will give a quantity of potatoes, and Air. C. D. White, of Komako has offered a sheep from time to time as required. Tho personnel of tho committees is as follows: Executive Committee: Air. R. AlacDonald (chairman), Rev. H. B. Goertz, Alessrs H. Fenwick, J. G. Bailey 7 , W. G. Romley, H. Fitzherbert, H. Bristow, H. J. Woodroofe, W. N. Brewer, J. Nicholson, W. Chcync, A. W. Trass, G. R. Taylor (treasurer), and J. A. AlcDoncll (secretary).

Ladies’ Committee: Alcsdamcs R.onilcy, Cheyne, W. R. Smith, Borrett, Fordyce, Goertz, Nicholson, Cook, Fountain, Bristow, Ticehurst, Horsncll, Trass, Evans, Fairlcss, Shaw, Sixtus, Davis, Read, Brewer, Fenwick, Amos and Misses Snclling, Ticehurst, Shaw, Sixtus; Mrs. Brewer was appointed convenor.

District Canvassers: Gorge to Hannah’s homestead, W. W. Gibb; traffic bridge to Raukawa road, W. Cheyne; Bunnythorpe-Ashhurst road, W. Fairless; Ashhurst-Colyton road, J. Evans; Todd’s road and Spur road, H. Woodroofc; Spur road to Raumai, R. MacDonald; Raumai to County Office, W. Howell; Pohangina township and to Ngaputahi, J. D. Galvin; Ngaputahi to Utuwai, F. J. Roberts; Utuwai to Piri Piri bridge, R. O. Batchelar and R. S. Roberts; Piri Piri to Totara Reserve, H. Knight; Totara Reserve to Awahou North, T. Close; Awahou South to Church. Hill, J. G. Bailey and H. Fitzlicrbcrt; Ashhurst township, Rev. 11. B. Goertz, W. G. Romley, R. F. Alackay, A. J. Havill. A number of the gentlemen mentioned were not actually present at the meeting, but having regard to the extreme urgency and worthiness of the cause, the committee has no doubt that they will perform the tasks allotted to them.
