Kairanga County Council Reduces Staff and Wages

CUTTING EXPENSES. In an’ endeavour to curtail expenses the Kairanga County Council yesterday decided to dispense with tho services of its engineer (Mr. J. E. Mcnzics) and in addition reduced salaries of certain employees. The chairman (Councillor J. Batchclar) offered to reduce his honorarium by £SO per annum, which was accepted. Ou the motion of Cr, P. J. Small, seconded by Cr. C. Anderson, it was decidod that councillors be not paid expenses entailed iu attending tho meetings of tho council. On the motion of Cr. J. A. Chcetham, seconded by Cr. R. A. Mercer, the sallary of the county clerk (Mr. N. I. Nielsen) was. reduced by £25 per annum. On tho motion of Cr. Small, seconded by Cr. M. A. Moody, the services of tho county engineer arc to he dispensed with, he to bo given three months’ notice of termination of his appointment as from February. I, 1931, and in last month to have holiday on full pay. On the motion of Cr. M. Voss, seconded by Cr. D. Collis, the assistant engineer’s salary was reduced 15 per cent., and it Was decided that the matter bo further reviewed on the termination of the present engineer’s appointment. On the motion of Cr. Chcetham, seconded by Cr. Voss, the wages of drivers were reduced to 14s per day, and of other employees to 12s Gd per day On tho motion of Cr. Collis, seconded by Cr. Anderson, tho rent of the council’s cottages was allowed to remain as at present, while on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Cr. Small, tho wages of the rangers were also allowed to remain as heretofore. On the motion of Cr. Anderson, seconded by Cr. Moody, it was A GC i dGd that the one week’s annual holiday on full pay granted to tho council’s employees be discontinued. All tho above reductions in salaries and wages took effect from February 1.
