Italy Not as Bad as Neighbours
MUSSOLINI’S CONSOLATION United Press Association. —By Electria Telegraph.—Copyright. ROME, Dec. 19. Italy’s position was reviewed by Signor Mussolini on the occasion of the passage cf a bill effecting an all-round reduction in salaries of Government employees. Signor Mussolini said that in view of the fact that many Italians thought that distress existed only in Italy, he had given instructions last August to relax the passport restrictions of emigrants for everywhere but America. At first many took advantage of the concession, but now the number entering Italy was greater than the number departing. Since reduced wages and prices had been enforced the Italian people had presented a magnificent example of discipline. Referring to the deficit of 900,000,000 lira, he said that it was impossible to increase taxation. Therefore, the deficit must be met by a reduction in expenditure.
