DYESTUFFS ACT
Continuance as Aid to Industry
BRITISH HOUSES DIFFER
British Official Wireless. RUGBY, Dec. IS.
The decision of tho House of Lords that tho Dyestuffs Act, under which the dyes industry has been protected for the past ten years should bo continued a further 12 months, was debated in the House of Commons last night. Tho President of tho Board of Trade announced that tho Government would resist tho decision, and after a debate in which some members of tho Labour and Liberal parties supported the continuance of tho Act on tho terms suggested by the House of Lords, a division was taken with 244 votes for the Government and 238 against. One Labour member voted with tho Opposition, and a small group of Labour members abstained. Eighteen Liberals voted against tho Government. Tho rejected amendment will bo considered by tho House of Lords to-day, when it is anticipated that their attitude will remain unchanged, and the Dyestuffs Act with its operation limited to one year will bo reinstated in the schedule of the Expiring Laws Continuance Bill. In this case the Bill will be returned to the House of Commons which may accept or reject it or sec it reach tho House of Commons by a further amendment of tho House of Lords amendment. In case of rejection, which is regarded as unlikely, the whole Bill would be lost and all Acts, including tho Wireless Telegraphy Act and tho Coal Mines Minimum Wage Act would lapse.
