In reply to a request from tlic Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce for a (lciinite pronouncement in connection with the suggestion that the railways should he placed under an independent board of directors, the Minister for Railways has replied that I lie decision with respect to this matter will be given when the Eight Hon. G. W. Forbes returns to New Zealand. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M. was on the Bench at the Magistrate's Court in Palmerston North yesterday morning when Annie Wood proceeded against William Henry Wood for disobedience of a maintenance order. The arrears was fixed at £l4O and defendant, who did not appear was convicted and sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the warrant to bo suspended so long as the order was complied with.
At yesterday's breaking-up ceremony at the West End School a tradition which has been carried out for several years was again observed. The headmaster, Mr F. W. Moore, was presented with a bouquet by the pupils of Std 5 and a Christmas cake from the school, handed over by Madge Price, a Std. 6 prefect. Mr T. H. Attwood, teacher of Std. 6 and Mr W. J. Walts, teacher of Std. 5, were also made recipients of Christmas cakes by prefects Agnes Grey and Margaret Beattie. FREE—Q-TOL SHAVING . CREAM.
