Green Streak led all the way and won by several lengths, with the native rider’s loin cloth fluttering bravely in the breeze. The Rabaul native has a great penchant for worn-out razor blades, often taking them in preference to tobacco or any other gift. With these they shave off unruly whiskers and fashion images from wood. Divorce courts are unknown in Rabaul, but the natives have many ways of getting satisfaction if their wives desert them. Two popular ways are to drag the erring wife back after clubbing her companion, or to claim alimony—or blood-money. Passengers on the Administrative yacht Franklin, which returned, to Sydney recently, said that if a “Mary” runs away with another native, the deserted husband will spend months on their trail.
