Hymns From The Air
N organ with no pipes or wind and possessing extraordinary ventriloquial powers, drawing its sound from the atmosphere, has just been
completed by two Frenchmen, M. Givelt and M. Couplex.
The instrument is called an electrotonic organ. The usual keyboard possesses 30 wireless valves, of which 15 are amplifying, in place of reedg and pipes.
"There were already in existence a number of instruments drawing music from the atmosphere,” M. Givelt said, “such as the diaphone. With our new instrument we can produce 108. “It has a wonderful purity of tone, which can be modified, in the most amazing manner. In addition to this the sound need not seem to emanate from the instrument, but in a church, for instance, it is possible to produce the illusions of heavenly voices coming from the roof.
“It could even give the impression of voices coming from all over the church at once,” he continued. “Another astounding possibility about this instrument is that the organist could play on a silent keyboard so that his performance would be heard in cathedrals, in various parts of the country and even in London.
